[dropcap size=small]F[/dropcap]ox has finalized a deal with Bryan Singer to direct the upcoming X-men: Apocalypse film.
This will be Singer’s fourth at-bat with the X-men, having previously directed the first two films, then returning for the more recent X-Men: Days of Future Past.
While Bryan Singer had previously announced Apocalypse back in December to much fanfare, he withdrew from the public eye after allegations of sexual abuse stirred up a scandal during promotion for Days of Future Past. Those charges were subsequently dropped, and Singer was cleared to once again helm the lucrative franchise.
Apocalypse is said to take place a decade after the events of Days of Future Past (in the ‘past’ timeline). The altering of time has unleashed a new and powerful enemy, En Sabah Nur, better known as Apocalypse, who will prove to be the most formidable foe the X-men have ever faced.
The cast of the film will be comprised of the First Class actors, with James McAvoy as Professor Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, and Hugh Jackman of course returning as Wolverine.
However, (SPOILERS! If you haven’t seen Days of Future Past read on at your own risk!) you’ll recall at the end of Days of Future Past, it is revealed that Cyclops (James Marsden) and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) have been resurrected from their X-Men: The Last Stand deaths.
Despite this, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, and Halle Berry (Storm), will likely not be returning for Apocalypse.
Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm will appear in the film, but it was stated that they will be younger versions of the characters, so in all likelihood these roles will be recast.
Other casting rumors have Channing Tatum joining on as Gambit, a role the actor himself has expressed a strong desire to play.
X-men: Apocalypse is due out in theaters May 27, 2016.
