“With this show, I begin the search for the real Stephen Colbert” – Stephen Colbert

[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]ith popular political satire shows ‘The Daily Show’ and ‘The Colbert Report’ off the air, how will we be informed of the circus that is American life? There’s no need to worry, Stephen Colbert hasn’t given thrown away that trade card just yet.

Stephen Colbert debuted on September 8th as the new host of ‘The Late Show’ after legendary David Letterman retired earlier this year.

Colbert has no plans to change the ‘talk-show wheel’, the spokes of which are pre-taped comedy bits, surprise guests (spoilers, it’s Jon Stewart), opening guests (George Clooney and Governor Jeb Bush), a monologue, and the sidekick bandleader (Jon Batiste).

Blame it on nerves or anxiety to live up to the hype, Colbert’s talk-show host was shaky at first, but definitely gained confidence as the show went on.Colbert’s opening interview with George Clooney felt ‘oddly stilted’. Colbert’s transitions from comedy to serious questions were described as ‘uncertain’, but his witty banter with Governor Jeb Bush in his second interview felt a lot more relaxed and natural.

With the first show done and out of the way, Colbert will certainly feel a bit more at ‘home’ behind the desk on ‘The Late Show’ tonight. The second episode airs tonight, September 9th, at 11:35/10:35c.
