The backstory for Doctor Doom in the upcoming movie Fantastic Four will draw on the classic comics for inspiration.
[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]Toby Kebbell says that Doctor Doom will be “ego driven and anyone who might be better than him or maybe perceived as better than him is what causes him to destruct, to destroy.” The film will use the character’s backstory in the comics as a basis for the character’s backstory in the movie.[/toggler]
[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]hoever is in charge of marketing for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie deserves a gold star. While we all have seen plenty of screen time regarding the members of the Fantastic Four team, we haven’t really seen much about Doctor Doom. Sure, there were a few glimpses of him with his metallic face and a hood. But that’s really it, the character is a mystery to us all as to how he got his powers and what his backstory is.
While Toby Kebbell was at this year’s San Diego Comic Con this past weekend, Cinemablend was able to have a quick interview with him regarding his character, Doctor Doom, and what the character’s background will be like.
“For what I was prepping, for what I was creating, my mother got cursed, my father died of exposure looking after me, and I’m crazy mad about it. And now I’m in America trying to be bright and be someone they could be proud of. Yes, I put it in personally, and , you know, I can’t talk as to what it is in the film. I put it in there. I needed it in there.”
From what it sounds like, Victor Von Doom aka Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movie will have a close background that is similar to the one in the comics. When we first see him in the movie he will be working in the Baxter Building and it is here that he finds himself struggling with the bureaucracy and getting funding taken away from his projects own personal projects. The man is quite frustrated and he has ill feeling towards the company because of this. However, these feelings only grow stronger when the genius Reed Richards, who is played by the talented Miles Teller, joins the company. Thus, Victor Von Doom’s ego becomes hurt by this new and upcoming scientist which will eventually lead to his ego driving him towards the destruction of Reed Richards.
“I know what Doom is: he’s ego driven and anyone who might be better than him or maybe perceived as better than him is what causes him to destruct, to destroy. And that’s all I could play. It didn’t matter what was new or fresh or cool. I know Doom, and it’s the best role… It’s hard to say, because you sound like such an egotistical douche saying, ‘It’s the best role,’ but Doom is the ultimate bad guy. I don’t think anyone is aware of what they’ve got with Doom.”
Fantastic Four will arrive in theaters on August 7th, 2015.
