Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is finally in theaters! Hooray.
Anyway, the film is meant to be the launching point for a larger DC cinematic universe (or “Expanded Universe”), with Suicide Squad coming this summer, Wonder Woman next summer, and Justice League Part One next fall.
Joining the Justice League is Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, aka the Flash. Fans of a certain show on The CW may be curious as to why Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen won’t be a part of the DC Expanded Universe, despite being a well-received interpretation of the character.
Justice League and Batman v Superman director Zack Synder, who is spearheading the upcoming slate of DC films, explained to New York Daily News why Gustin’s Barry Allen won’t be in Justice League, and why a new version of the character was needed.
“I just don’t think it was a good fit,”said Snyder. “I’m very strict with this universe and I just don’t see a version where…that (tone is) not our world.”
Here Snyder is referring to the dark and gloomy tone he has decided to take with DC Expanded Universe. The lighthearted and smiling Barry Allen of the Arrowverse would clash with “no fun allowed” world Snyder is building.
Snyder did however kind of allude to the fact that their can be multiple DC universes, so more than one Flash can exist, and maybe meet. After all, his Flash is no stranger to parallel universes, evident in the show, and the upcoming Supergirl crossover episode.
“Even if Grant Gustin is my favorite guy in the world and he’s very good, we made a commitment to the multi-verse (idea), so it’s just not a thing that’s possible.”
