The first trailer of Dragon Ball Super has made it’s way to Japan; we get it early.

Japan’s time differential puts them about a day ahead of us. At the time of this writing, it is Sunday, June 14 there (June 13th here), and they have received their trailer after an episode of Dragon Ball Z Kai. Many fans likely sat in heavy anticipation waiting for the trailer to debut, though everywhere else in the world, fans have not been told when they will get their first glimpse of Dragon Ball Super (DBS).

The trailer leaked online (in Japanese) thanks to fans who snagged it and posted it there. Likely it will be a while before we see the footage, or any real bits of Dragon Ball Super in English, but it will be here before you know it! In the meantime, take a look at the teaser trailer the lucky folks in Japan got to see debut.

The footage doesn’t show a whole lot, but confirms what was previously expected such as new outfits and the return of Hercule, Buu, King Kai, Trunks, Goten, Gohan, and of course, Goku and Vegeta. Beerus and Whis are also in the short 15 second trailer, but their return confirms the series will be heavily influenced on Gods threatening the livelihood of the Z Fighters (“S Fighters” now?).

Dragon Ball Super takes place after Dragon Ball Z, a period post the defeat of Majin Buu. We don’t necessarily know how long after, but it does raise more questions than provide answers.

We do know that Dragon Ball GT was never considered canon by Toriyama’s standards, or the fans. Even so, Dragon Ball S wipes out GT entirely and overrides any previous hope of keeping GT alive as a canon-continuity. That said, there were a few characters featured in the series that we have yet to confirm their return to DBS.

At the end of Dragon Ball Z in its final episode, 10 years after the defeat of Majin Buu, we are introduced to Uub, the reincarnation of Kid Buu, at the 28th World Martial Arts Championship. At this time, we also meet Pan (who we know will be in DBS as she appears in 2013’s Battle of Gods and 2015’s Resurrection ‘F’), and Trunks’ younger sister Bra (Bulla in some versions).

Both Bra and Uub are not in either Battle of Gods or Resurrection ‘F’, not even mentioned; though in some translations Bra seems to be older than Pan, but she could be younger so its possible she may show up later. Uub too is older than both of them, but does not show up until 10 years after Buu’s defeat, making the young warrior roughly 10 years of age presumably, and likely to appear after Resurrection ‘F’.

A recent quote from Masako Nozawa (the voice of Goku in Japan) revealed that Gotenks will be featured in the series to some capacity, leaving fans to speculate whether the young Saiyan Fusion will reveal the first Fused Super Saiyan God. It is not unreasonable, considering how quickly the two became Super Saiyans as children (ages 5 and 6 roughly) and then a Super Saiyan 3 while fused, something Vegeta was never able to accomplish (only Goku managed to pull that transformation off).

In Resurrection ‘F’, Goku and Vegeta are about on par with each other as Super Saiyan God Super Saiyans, the blue-haired form that is the result of powering up to a Super Saiyan while in the form of a Super Saiyan God. Though it can’t be confirmed, it would be something completely plausible to see Gotenks pull the same transformation off and “wow” audiences once more.

Finally, the characters Towa and Mira, among others such as the Supreme Kai of Time, all whom were featured in Dragon Ball XenoVerse (and DBO before that), could certainly make the canon of the anime/manga by debuting in DBS as well. Some fans have speculated that the Supreme Kai of Time could be a god of some kind (The God of Time?).

Let us not forget that after the events of the Cell Saga, we have not heard from Future Trunks, however Time Patrol Trunks, your partner in DBXV, is one and the same and could be making his return by coming back to the story requesting help with time rips caused by his first arrival in the Android Saga. Doesn’t seem to be a stretch, and it would make for a very interesting saga within Dragon Ball Super

Dragon Ball Super is set to debut on July 5 in Japan, though there has been no official word on when the rest of the world can expect it. They’ll likely show up online in some form or another as they air, but we highly suggest waiting and watching the official release when it comes to your region of the world.
