Monday Disney and Lucas film made an announcement video that filming for the next installment has begun exactly where Episode VII had left off. It was also revealed that Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran will be joining in as well.
While still heavily shrouded in mystery, it was revealed that Del Toro would be playing an agent of the dark side, the only detail of his character and this was confirmed by Del Toro himself. Whereas Dern’s character has no details on what character that she might play. Right now though the rumor is that Episode VIII could take a look into Rey’s past and family relations, meaning Dern would be a great candidate to play Rey’s mother. Again nothing is confirmed but it is still a possibility.
Kelly Marie Tran’s character as well has not been given any details either, but as she has been working for years in minor rolls online and on TV, its interesting that she has been named to join the cast without having any major rolls prior. So what does this mean? If she is being listed with people like Del Toro And Dern in a post production announcement, she must have a pretty major roll in the film. Additionally as an Asian American actress, she adds even more diversity to the growing Star Wars universe.
While it was already told that principal photography had already began back in September, the studio announcement began like this:
“Rey took her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will continue her epic journey with Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter to the continuing Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII, which began principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London on Feb. 15, 2016.”
J.J. Abrams will not be back to direct this installment but he will be an executive producer, taking over the directing job will be Rian Johnson, who previously directed three episodes of Breaking Bad as well as Looper.
Star Wars: Episode VIII is planned to come out on Dec. 15 2017 but coming to theaters before that will be Star Wars: Rogue One, a story about the team that steals the Death Star plans. Rouge One will come out Dec. 16th of this year.
