It had 8 times the amount of sales the previous movie had, The Hunger Games!
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t’s been a while since we have seen the amount of excitement that is growing for Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. On Monday, Disney and Lucasfilms kicked off pre-ticket sales for the movie and it shattered records on several websites, including breaking the record for most pre-ticket sales on the first day, which was previously held by The Hunger Games on Fandango.
“Movie theaters are continually adding new show times on Fandango to meet the phenomenal demand. The enthusiasm for this year’s most anticipated movie is out of this world and we expect it to continue all the way to its debut on December 18,” said a statement from Fandango.
Fandango, along with other sites, experienced outages after tickets went up for sale on Monday night after the newest trailer was shown at halftime of Monday Night Football. The first day of sales for Star Wars VII was also record breaking on IMAX. The movie generated $6.5 million in domestic sales for those who want to see the movie in one of 390 IMAX screens in North America. No single day has been this successful for IMAX. In fact, up until Monday, IMAX has never peaked over $1 million for single-day ticket sales.
Star Wars VII also broke records in Europe, via Vue Entertainment, the U.K.’s third largest chain that owns 755 movie screens. They ended the day selling 45,000 tickets to watch the highest-anticipated movie in recent memory. If you haven’t bought your ticket for this movie yet, be sure to do so.
