It’s been two years since it was announced, but we finally have more information on Square Enix’s Avengers game, thank to their E3 press conference.
Showcased at the end of the press conference with a trailer, the Avengers game features a story mode focusing on Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and Hulk. The game opens with a celebration(“A Day”) for the opening of an Avengers west coast base in San Francisco. However, there is an attack led by what appears to be Taskmaster (based off the skull masks), that leaves San Fran devastated, and Cap seemingly dead. The game then jumps five years later (like Endgame) with the world in shambles, the Avengers broken, but ready to reassemble and fight back.
Developed by Crystal Dynamics in collaboration with Eidos-Montréal, Nixxes Software, and Crystal Northwest, Avengers is an action-adventure game that features co-op for up to four players. The game will seemingly follow a live-service model similar to titles like Destiny where new content and playable heroes are added to the game regularly. It was confirmed, thankfully, that the game will not feature loot boxes and that every hero added to the game will be free.
That’s great to hear, but we still know very little about how the game plays since the trailer was mostly cutscenes. We’re especially interested in how the live-service components of the game will be handled, so hopefully more details will emerge soon.
Marvel’s Avengers comes to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on May 15, 2020.
