Both games have gained noticeable problems in the jump to next-gen.
[dropcap size=small]L[/dropcap]ast week, Activision released the Prototype Biohazard Bundle for the Xbox One and PS4 as digital downloads. The release of these games was sudden and unexpected, and perhaps now we know why.
Both ‘remastered’ versions of Prototype and Prototype 2 have noticeable performance issues, specifically low frame rates, leading to choppy and slow gaming experiences for the player.
While the PS4 version of the bundle has yet to be examined in-depth, Digital Foundry has taken a look at the Xbox One version of the games, and analyzed the frame rates of each.
In their analysis of the Prototype 1 remaster (below), the game generally runs at 30 frames per second (FPS), but performance tends to dip into the 20s. While not terrible, one cannot help to question why a game from 2009 that is remade for new and more powerful consoles, and now in 1080p HD, isn’t capable of running at a smooth 60 FPS like other recent remasters (The Last of Us or God of War 3 for example).
Also analyzed was the performance of Prototype 2 (below), and the sequel appears to be in worse shape. As evident from the video, the frame rate remains in the low 20s, and there is noticeable stuttering during cut scenes. That means that the Xbox 360 version of the game, released over three years ago, runs better, as it has a more consistent and higher frame rate. Digital Foundry calls the Xbox One version of Prototype 2, “among the worst performing games on Xbox One to date.”
With low frame rates and choppy gameplay, the Prototype Biohazard Bundle isn’t in the best shape. It might be best to hold off on checking out this bundle until these games are patched, or at least, the $50 price tag is slashed.
