Vulture confirmed this at New York Comic Con with Penguin actor Robin Lord Taylor!
[dropcap size=small]R[/dropcap]obin Lord Taylor, who plays Gotham’s Oswald “Penguin” Cobblebot, has been asked who will be playing his dad. He has finally revealed the answer.
Lord revealed that Paul Reubens will play as the Penguin’s dad. We already know that the Penguin’s mom is played by Carol Kane, but there were a few other things that we learned from the New York Comic Con.
If you are not caught up with the series, there are spoilers up ahead!
1. Michael Chiklis’s character will most likely be sticking around.
Michael Chiklis was asked to describe Gotham City Police Department’s new leader, Captain Nathaniel Barnes, who is army-trained and just a straight-up jerk. Chiklis chuckled and replied by saying that “Barnes comes in as a countermeasure to the villainy that is running amok in Gotham,” Chiklis said. “And he serves as a mentor to [Gordon]. He’s trying to pull [Gordon] out of the muck of ends-justifies-the-means law enforcement.”
When a fan asked if Chiklis’s character would be doing if the show’s narrative were 10 years in the future, he said, “Oh, what leapt into my mind was ‘Not dead!'” He added that while Barnes and Gordon do see eye-to-eye on many issues, as Gotham fans will see, Barnes will also butt heads with Gordon. “And as you can see, I have a rather large head.”
2. More encounters to come between Edward Nygma and Oswald Cobblebot.
One of the show’s most popular teases in season one was the police station meeting between Edward “The Riddler” Nygma and Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblebot was claimed by scribe John Stevens. Stevens was asked by plenty of fans where that scene came from and if there would be more of the two characters in season two. “Nygma is “clearly obsessed by Cobblepot.” Stephens added “[Nygma and Cobblepot] have a rather large story together [coming up].”
3. Barbara Kean and Jim Gordon might get back together.
An interesting side story going into season 2 is that Jim Gordon may be getting back with his ex-wife Barbara Kean (played by actress Erin Richards). Stephen’s characterized this as a central “attraction/repulsion element to the show.” “Jim feels somewhat responsible for the monster Barbara has become,” Stephens said. “That will never go away. Can they find themselves in a non-adversarial relationship? Possibly.”
Richards said that she loved the “repulsion” aspect with her character because of the direction that her character is heading, based on her drinking and drug dependency problems in season one. “It was such a genius thing to do [with Barbara] because it released her from all of the shackles of her previous self,” Richards said. A reunion would definitely stir up things in the series, considering that Barbara sent a mental patient beat the crap out of Gordon two weeks ago and publicly chloroformed and tortured Jim’s girlfriend Leslie Thompkins at her organized charity event a week ago.
4. The Proto-Joker could still be alive.
When people respond to questions with “no comment,” it can often speak volumes to what is being asked from the fans. This specific question refers to if Jerome Valeska is still alive and will be in the next season after being murdered in the episode a couple weeks ago. “If you watch this season’s episodes closely, you’ll see seeds of that story growing,” Stephens added. Valeska looked pretty dead when we last saw him, after seeing him in the police morgue. But the rumor is valid, with Valeska avoiding a fan’s question about his character potentially still being alive. Valeska did look surprised when Galavan turned on him and stabbed him with the knife that looked very real.
5. Batman will not become Batman anytime soon.
During a Q&A session with the audience, Stephens was asked if the narrative were launched 10 years in to the future, what would the show look like? “The thing that’s so exciting for us on the show is the origin of these people,” Stephens said. “That’s the story that we’re telling. [Skipping ahead ten years] is kind of skipping over what we like most about characters [in the show].” According to Stephens, Bruce Wayne will become Batman eventually in the show…just not yet. Stephens did confirm that in ten years time, Bruce Wayne will be Batman in the show.
