Overwatch to get Competitive Mode in June, Campaign Mode a possibility

Overwatch is live, fun, chaotic, and about to get a whole lot more competitive.

While we are still enjoying yesterday’s launch of Overwatch, with our review underway (Spoiler Alert: it’s awesome), news of upcoming game modes, both confirmed and being considered, are being talked about less that 24 hours after the game’s initial release.

During a Q&A on Overwatch’s official Facebook page, Game Director Jeff Kaplan chimed in confirming that the Competitive Mode that was available during the Beta will be brought back to Overwatch this June, after some fine-tuning and reworking takes place to include some necessary patches and hot-fixes. But that isn’t all.

genji-screenshot-002Although there is plenty of media available surrounding Overwatch, in the form of cinematic shorts, comics, and other bits here and there on the official Overwatch website, many players (us included) were hoping for a Campaign Mode experience, seeing as there is only the option for PVP and PVAI at this time. Trust us when we say, this isn’t something that you truly miss when playing the chaotic PVP at your fingertips. Multiplayer is so diverse, with so many different play-styles, that you really have your hands full and attention set on the detailed maps and abilities of your character, that you probably won’t remember the lack of lore in-game upon launch. But just how long can PVE-driven players tolerate the absence of a campaign?

Considering the above, it’s important to recognize the deep, rich, story-telling abilities of Blizzard, and of course a Campaign Mode, while not set in stone, is absolutely a possibility. Kaplan went on to say that if there indeed is a Campaign Mode around in the works, it would be cooperative, more than a single player campaign, which only solidifies that talks are happening about the potential inclusion of a PVE environment.

Beyond rumored campaigns, and the return of Competitive Mode, Blizzard is also looking to include a social aspect to the game in the form of Clans/Guilds, or at least something equivalent to help you build a core team of players to take on the challenges and obstacles that lay before you during your quest to dominate PVP.

All things considered, we will be quite busy taking down foes in PVP to worry about a campaign for now, but its nice to know Blizzard has their priorities lined up with the future of Overwatch in mind.
