New Donkey Kong King Crowned

Gaming in the 80’s was a magical era, filled with mullet-headed record setters. Billy Mitchell is a shining example of this, as he was considered to once be king. Have you ever seen King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters? It’s, by far, one of my favorite documentaries. It stars former Donkey Kong king, Billy Mitchell and newcomer Steve Wiebe. I won’t give away too much, but the movie is about a no-name gamer’s rise to fame, playing tug-of-war with the Donkey Kong world record. Go watch it. Now.

Of course, since the documentary released, a new King was crowned, as Hank Chien has recently stepped in and dethroned the former record holder. This was in December of 2010. As of last week, Robbie Lakeman has claimed the world record for Donkey Kong, scoring a whopping 1,141,800 points, which was 3,200 points higher than Hank Chien’s former record.

How long will Lakeman be able to hold onto the title before it’s reclaimed?
