When it comes to movie sequels, nothing is sacred. Literally.
Apparently, actor/filmmaker/all-around great guy Mel Gibson is working with Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace on a sequel to The Passion of the Christ.
Wallace, via The Hollywood Reporter, revealed that film will focus on Jesus rising from the dead.
“I always wanted to tell this story,” Wallace explains. “The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”
For those who haven’t seen the first movie, The Passion of the Christ centers on Jesus of Nazareth, a humble carpenter who is brutally crucified by the Roman Empire. In the book series the first film is based on, the Bible, Jesus rises again and does all sorts of cool stuff.
The Passion of the Christ was a gigantic success, making over $600 million when it first released in 2004 from an independent studio. All joking aside, we’re fairly sure this film won’t happen, and we’re more curious to know if Gibson is really that crazy to believe this is a good idea. We’ll be damned if it happens though.
But in all seriousness, it’s exciting to see the BCU (Bible Cinematic Universe) finally come together. After the mixed-reception of films like Noah and Exodus: Gods and Kings, we have faith that The Passion 2 will be the hit movie this franchise needs. And who knows, maybe we’ll finally get that John the Baptist spinoff we’ve all been waiting for.
