THQ nearly completed an awesome looking action game starring the heroes from the MCU.
Believe it or not, there was never a big console Avengers video game that would tie-in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Well, there almost was.
In 2010, THQ Australia began work on a large-scale first-person game starring the Avengers that was set to release on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U
This ambitious game was set to feature robust cooperative gameplay that would emulate the teamwork of The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Players would be able to choose between Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, as well as unlockable heroes like Black Widow and Hawkeye.
Check out concept art and early gameplay screenshots of the project below:
Also, the game’s story apparently wasn’t going follow the events of the 2012 film, rather it would feature a plot similar to the 2008 comic storyline, “Secret Invasion,” which saw the shape shifting Skrulls invade Earth.
So what happened to this awesome-sounding game?
Well, unfortunately the game’s publisher, THQ, went bankrupt in 2012, forcing many projects to be auctioned off or abandoned.
Before THQ Australia closed, they met with Marvel to see if they would help support the game in its final stages of development. Unfortunately, Marvel refused due to the expenses required to finish it.
Based off what concept art and footage is available, this game appeared to have lots of potential, and we’re upset it never got to see the light of day.
