Earlier today, Marvel Studios took to the stage during the Disney Entertainment Showcase, better known as D23, and announced the release date of Marvel Studios’ X-Men, which hits theaters on May 5th 2028. Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier made it official, which gives you plenty of time to pretend you understand the current state of the Marvel timeline. But perhaps even bigger news, was the confirmation of the core cast.

- Kit Connor is Cyclops, so the Heartstopper guy will now spend a whole film with his eyes hidden behind a ruby visor. A curious move for an actor whose entire appeal involved people being able to see his face.
- Christopher Abbott is Professor Charles Xavier, which means someone watched Kraven and Girls and concluded that this was clearly a man built to run a mansion full of psychic teenagers. We await the bald cap with great anticipation.
- Samara Weaving is Emma Frost. Anyone who survived Ready or Not already knows she can wreck your evening while looking impeccable, which is the entire personality of the Hellfire Club’s diamond-skinned telepath.
- Inde Navarette is Rogue, and hers is the trajectory that breaks the brain. A near-total unknown a year ago, then a horror breakout, and now she is headlining one of the biggest comic franchises on the planet. Some people find themselves. Inde found the express elevator.
- Maya Boyd is Storm. Here is the detail worth sitting with: Boyd built her career on Broadway and has yet to headline a movie. She is going straight from live theater to controlling the literal weather in a tentpole blockbuster, which is a promotion the rest of us can only dream about.
- Sadie Sink is back as Jean Grey, carrying over from her introduction in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
- Adam Driver is Mister Sinister, filed under his given name of Nathaniel Milbury. In the comics he is the scientist who experiments his way into mutant powers and then spends decades being a thorn in the team’s side. Somewhere a Star Wars fan is already bracing to have their heart broken by this man a second time.

As for who is missing, the list runs long. No Wolverine. No Magneto. No Beast, since Charles Melton, long the frontrunner for the furry blue genius, stepped away from the project before the show.
Feige framed this as only part of the lineup, so the rumor engine gets to fire right back up for round two in the near future.
Now the real question we have is just how the X-Men are going to be introduced into the MCU. The inclusion of Sink’s Jean Grey in SMBND suggests that the X-Men, or more specifically mutants, have been living amongst us all along and that perhaps they were never relevant to any plotlines or stories in the MCU and were therefore never mentioned. Then of course there is the real possibility that Charles Xavier mind-wiped everyone any time mutant shenanigans got out of hand.
Whatever the case, we are stoked for this lineup and can’t wait for more.
