Finally, we know a little bit more about what is in store for fans and the new series from Akira Toriyama.

[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]V-Jump shares a message from series creator Akira Toriyama about the plot of DBS. The series picks up 6 months after Buu’s defeat, recaps Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ (which are both part of DBZ) and explores various galaxies and introduces new “Super” Dragon Balls.[/toggler]

The hype around the Dragon Ball franchise this year has been insane, to put it lightly. Fans have been going crazy since the announcement of a sequel to 2013’s Battle of Gods, and once word got announced that the film was being released in over 70+ countries worldwide, that built the hype even more.

And that isn’t even the half of it.

Fans across the globe (now known as “Dragon Ballers”) were brought together in unison by the news of a sequel series, the first new addition (aside from the movies) to debut on television in over 18 years.

The new series, titled Dragon Ball Super, promises to deliver the same sort of fun as it’s two canon predecessors (not including DBGT with this), as both the story and the character designs will be done by original series creator himself, Akira Toriyama.

Up until this point, we knew very little about the series with only Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ giving us a few new characters and a couple new Super Saiyan transformations. This lead to an overwhelming amount of speculation and created more questions than answers. What are the origins of the gods? is Goku a god? Can Vegeta transform into Super Saiyan 3? What happened to Super Siayan 4? Will Yamcha be useful for once?

V-Jump was the host of a showcase event in Tokyo to promote Dragon Ball Super on Wednesday, July 1. During the event, a lot of plot details were brought to clarity via on-screen message from Toriyama, but still no word on whether Yamcha will be of significant support to the Z Fighters (“S Fighters” now?)

“Dragon Ball Super is a complete continuation of the Majin Buu story arc. It’s got a bit of post-battle aftermath, continues with the “Battle of Gods” arc where the God of Destruction Beerus appears and the “Revival of ‘F’” arc where Freeza comes back to life, and then, I’ve written a strange new story where they finally depart from this universe. They’re fighting against their neighbors, Universe 6! They’ll yell at me if I give away too many spoilers, so I’ll keep the rest a secret, but they’re chasing after giant Super Dragon Balls; I think things will unfold in a bright and simple way, that will be really fun and exciting!

Since it’s another universe, loads of new characters will turn up. I’ll do my best to draw the tons of character designs necessary, so I’m looking forward to this too.

You know, it suddenly occurs to me that somewhere along the line the Dragon Ball anime has become quite a huge story. Since I’m the guy who drew the thing, it’s a bit weird for me to say this, but when I first started out I never dreamed it would have a universe as a setting (laughs). Don’t worry though, it’s still going to be the same sort of easy-to-understand content as always. Please be sure to watch Dragon Ball Super on TV!”

Dragon Ball Super – Teaser #2 Shows off New Characters

Weekly Shonen Jump recently revealed that DBS will follow the events of the defeat of Evil Kid Buu, only six months after Goku obliterated him from existence with a Spirit Bomb. It has been stated that the actual date of the timeline will be in November, Age 774. This is before the events of Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’ and will cover both of those events in a recap before jumping into the new story which will feature multiple universes.

NOTE: This will be the first time that not just one, but two films are recognized and brought into the canon. Previously, the two films History of Trunks and Bardock: Father of Goku were considered canon (and still are) but both are considered more of canon prequels and origin stories speaking of the past, rather than exploring and expanding on the future.

DBS will launch an introduction of new “Super” Dragon Balls, include many new characters and multiple universes with an exploration into what it means to be a “Saiyan God” for both Goku and Vegeta, who obtain the form before anyone else in the series (that we know of).

It is unclear whether or not the events of these films (which are still considered part of Dragon Ball Z and not Dragon Ball Super necessarily) and the beginning saga(s) of Dragon Ball Super will play into the final chapters of the DBZ manga as chapters 517-519 look into the lives of the Z Fighters 10 years after the defeat of Majin Buu and introduce the reincarnation of Buu in the form of the young Indian boy, Uub as well as Vegeta’s daughter, Bra/Bulla.

Dragon Ball Super debuts in Japan on Sunday, July 5 at 9:00am. New episodes are to debut every following Sunday at the same time. No word yet on when the series will debut in other regions outside of Japan.
