Riot Games owner Tencent announced the Tencent Games Platform Box at CES Asia last week!
[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t’s unclear if this new system will appear in the western part of the world, but one thing is for sure, the Tencent Games Platform Box (TGP) will be a huge seller to gamers overseas!
Unlike the U.S. and other countries who have had the luxury of playing video games on consoles, China has not. In 2000, China issued a law that prohibited those from playing/owning consoles and it lasted up until last summer when the law was lifted. That gave Tencent the opportunity to plan, build and release the TGP.Â
The TGP is built with a sixth-generation Intel core processor and runs Windows 10 with a “TGP mode.” While the console is in TGP mode, you are able to download and stream games on your console. So games like League of Legends, FIFA Online 3, NBA 2K Online, Monster Hunter Online, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Tournament would be available for TGP mode. Ironically, Tencent helped develop all of these games with Asia developers. There will be more games from third-party developers for the TGP this year.
Video game industry analyst ZhugeEX says “[i]t’s basically a Windows 10-powered gaming console but with smart features designed to transcend traditional gaming.”
Tencent Games Online is the largest online gaming community and with how popular League of Legends is, that alone could promote huge sales for the TGP. This is also the first time that anyone in China will even be able to own a console in over a decade. If sales go really well in Asia, I wouldn’t be surprised if the TGP eventually found it’s way west to the U.S.
