It has been nearly 15 years since Kung Fu Hustle came out, and to us, it stands as one of the most fun action comedies around. From writer, director, actor, Stephen Chow, KFH has just the perfect amount of flair, humor, and storytelling combined with Chow’s excellent vision for delivering impressive action sequences. To put it bluntly, it is one of our favorites and we would be delighted to see a sequel, but that may not exactly be what we are getting…
During a Q&A earlier this week in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, CHow was promoting his upcoming movie ‘The King of Comedy’ where a fan asked about the possibility of a Kung Fu Hustle sequel. Chow was fairly direct on his response where he stated the following:
“Yes. Actually it won’t be so much a Kung Fu Hustle 2; it would be a modern-day kung fu story set in a foreign country and have its own standalone story. But it will have a similar direction and concept as Kung Fu Hustle.”
So yes, but no, leaning more toward the no. To us, this sounds more like a spiritual successor to Kung Fu Hustle rather than a direct sequel, but there really is not a lot more information out there on the progress of the film right now. And if we take his words at face value, especially the bit about being a similar concept to KFH, then that sort of solidifies it.
Fans certainly want it, and we are happy to hear that Chow has plans to make another Kung Fu movie, but until we get more details on how it relates to the original Kung Fu Hustle, we aren’t going to assume it’s a direct sequel. Maybe it will be in the same universe (because we could really use a KFHEU), and maybe it won’t. Regardless, anything from Stephen Chow has us interested.
