[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]fter nearly two decades of making a mockery of news and politics, Jon Stewart has announced that he will be leaving The Daily Show on Comedy Central.
The news of Stewart’s departure began circulating online via audience members of today’s live taping, who began posting to social media that Stewart had announced to the crowd that he would be retiring. Since then, Comedy Central has confirmed via Twitter that Jon Stewart will indeed be leaving The Daily Show later this year.

There has been no word yet as to the reason of Stewart’s departure, but it could be speculated that the comedian may want to focus on directing, having recently directed the film Rosewater. It’s likely that we will know more after the episode airs tonight.
According to Comedy Central’s official statement, The Daily Show will “endure for years to come,” implying that the show may continue on without Stewart.
