[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he internet is a-buzz with news that Spider-Man may be headed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, keep in mind that right now these are mere rumors and speculations, but the pretty reliable folks at Hitfix are suggesting that Sony may be in negotiations with Marvel to have everyone’s favorite Web-Head make the swing over to Marvel’s universe– meaning we could see Spidey team-up with the Avengers!

This is a pretty big deal folks!

It’s been apparent that Sony might not really know what the Hell they’re doing with the Spider-Man property. Meanwhile, Marvel is striking gold with every new film release. It sounds like Sony is playing a smart game, and there’s no doubt that big numbers and percentages are being tossed around by studio execs.

For those not in the know, back in the 90’s, Marvel started selling off the movie rights to its biggest comic characters to various Hollywood studios. Marvel later started its own motion picture studio after it began reacquiring the rights to their characters, but they still haven’t gotten all of them back. Check out the handy chart below from The Geek Twins to see who owns the rights to what.

Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which will be the next time we visit the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is due out May 1, 2015. Perhaps just enough time for at least a Spidey cameo? Sony’s next Spidey-verse installment is The Sinister Six spinoff, slated for a November 11, 2016 release.

Should either the Sony or Marvel camps confirm these rumors, you’ll find the latest developments right here on Geek Outpost!
