Shakin’ up the Bond world, and Stirrin’ up some trouble.
[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]oo ‘street’ to be James Bond was the remark heard when Anthony Horowitz (new James Bond author) was asked if Idris Elba would be considered as the new James Bond.
For those of you that don’t know, Daniel Craig is rumored to be hanging up the gun and badge after Spectre is finished filming. Craig, 47, has been portraying British secret spy James Bond since 2006 in Casino Royale. His ‘retirement’ from the Bond series comes from wanting to spend more time with his family.
Up until Horowitz’ comment, Elba was the apparent heir to the title, according to fans. However, Horowitz has a different take on Elba’s fan nomination. “For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a color issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond,” the “Trigger Mortis” author said, suggesting that “Hustle” star Adrian Lester would be a better choice. “Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.” source
Idris Elba is known as Heimdall in Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He is also known for his portrayal as legendary politician and activist, Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. After such roles, and the success portraying said roles, Elba is clearly able to professional, suave, and ‘non-street’.
Horowitz later apologized via his twitter stating “I am mortified to have caused offence”.
What do you think? Do you believe Horowitz was right in wanting a more suave Bond, or is Elba born to play the British spy? Let us know what you think!
