In an interview with The Daily Beast, Amy Schumer revealed why she said no to one of Comedy Central’s most popular shows.
[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]Amy Schumer was the number one candidate on Comedy Central’s list for possible candidates to replace Jon Stewart for The Daily Show. Amy turned down the role because she didn’t want to know what she would be doing “for the next 5 years.” Her contract with Comedy Central would have her be the host from 2016 to 2021.[/toggler]
[dropcap size=small]E[/dropcap]veryone thought Amy Schumer was going to be the next host to replace Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. Even Jon Stewart thought so. But as it turns out the star of the Inside Amy Schumer, and soon to be star of the movie Trainwreck, has turned down the role because she “loves not knowing”.
“I was so honored to be asked and considered. With Comedy Central, I project so much ‘You’re my parents!’ on the network and the people who run it, so them saying, ‘We believe in you and trust that you can do this,’ I thought, ‘Oh my god, thank you!”, Amy Schumer said in her interview with The Daily Beast. “And then I thought, ‘Well, I could give everyone I love a job and we could all be together for five years. But picturing being in a building and knowing what I was going to do for five years — I love not knowing. And I’ve never done anything safe or to make money for that reason. So, you know, I said, ‘I can’t start now.'”
It’s an understandable statement coming from Amy Schumer and while she did say she hasn’t done anything safe, she does have a safe career ahead of her. Her own show, Inside Amy Schumer, has garnered plenty of praise from its fans and critics. The show touches on issues like ageism, sexism and beauty standards from a comedic stand point. The show just was renewed for its fourth season.
With Amy Schumer turning down the role for The Daily Show, Comedy Central eventually chose Trevor Noah to replace Jon Stewart. But judging from Amy Schumer’s statement above, that’s perfectly okay with her. Just as long as she is plotting her own course.
Amy Schumer will be starring in her movie Trainwreck. The comedy hits theaters July 17th.
