Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot return in the cartoon airing on Disney XD.
Disney XD has recently released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, premiering this September. Check it out below.
While certainly brief, the trailer does show that the new cartoon will indeed have ties to the incredibly popular live-action Guardians of the Galaxy released last summer. In fact, the series is set to be a continuation of the film, picking up were it left off, but it will not be considered official canon for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Also, the actors who portrayed the Guardians for the film will not return to voice them for the series. Instead, an impress array of veteran voice actors has been cast for these roles. These actors are Will Friedle as Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, David Sobolov as Drax the Destroyer, Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot, and James Arnold Taylor as Yondu.
The official synopsis for the series is as follows:
“Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” features themes of redemption and the importance of friendships and family told through a series of riveting sequential story arcs. The series follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.
Even though it isn’t considered canon, hopefully Guardians of the Galaxy will retain the humor and soul of its live-action precursor. An epic retro soundtrack would be nice too.
