The new handheld is coming late next year, to cost $300.

Previously called ‘Steamboy,’ Smach Zero is a new handheld game system that runs on Steam OS, effectively making it a portable Steam Machine.
As evident from pictures of the device, it will feature a control stick, two touch pads, and seven buttons on the front and six on the rear. Smach Zero bears a heavy resemblance to a PS Vita, but it has functionality of Valve’s official Steam controller.

Other hardware specifications of the console include a 720p touchscreen, 4 GB of RAM, HDMI output, Bluetooth and Wifi connectivity, and 32 GB internal storage, a nice feature considering the Vita’s proprietary memory format.
Pre-orders for the Smach Zero begin on November 10th for $299, and it is set to launch late 2016.
Smach Zero sounds like it has great potential, and specs that should please at least some PC gamers. However, if the PS Vita’s sales, and the 3DS to an extent, are any indication, portable gaming is much more popular on mobile devices. Hopefully Smach can cater to an audience who truly want to play games like Civilization 5, Half-Life 2, or Oregon Trail anywhere.
