One step back, two steps forward for Hansel and Gretel.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]fter Tommy Wirkola, director of the first Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, walked away from directing the sequel, it was unsure if the project would succeed. The world which Wirkola had created for Hansel and Gretel was uniquely his style – gory and comical. It seemed as if no director would be able to fill his shoes and direct the anticipated sequel.
When all hope seemed lost, Bruno Aveillan stepped forward to direct the sequel. With the help of Vincent Van Dyke and Steven Ilous, Hansel and Gretel: Death’s Messenger was pushed into motion. Along with a title change, Ilous and Van Dyke have progressed on the idea of witches, and have included a new villain called the High Priestess. New antagonists will also include the ‘undead’, or zombies.
Above is the released concept artwork of the High Priestess by Van Dyke. Below is Van Dyke’s concept artwork for the undead.
Could it be that Aveillan is able to finish what Wirkola started? Even though Wirkola will not be directing, it is said that he is willing to work with Paramount Pictures and Aveillan to complete the project.
With Aveillan and Wirkola working in tandem off screen, and Hansel and Gretel working in tandem on screen, it is completely hopeful that Hansel and Gretel: Death’s Messengers will be released in 2016.
