You did it internet! You survived the Ghostbusters reboot ! It wasn’t the worst thing ever!
Well, turns out it almost was the worst thing ever. Almost.
It’s no secret that the development of the recent Ghostbusters film was a very tumultuous process where the film changed directors, cast, and premise numerous times. This is no secret because of the 2014 Sony email hack (thanks Seth Rogen!), revealing dozens of conversations between Sony Pictures executives and filmmakers compromising in order to make Ghostbusters happen.
In a recent video from RedLetterMedia (featuring Scientist Man and two losers named Jay and Rich), the development and Internet response to Ghostbusters 2016 is analyzed in-depth, including the resurgence of one hacked email between Sony Pictures Executive Amy Pascal and the film’s director Paul Feig.
In this email, Feig pitches his take on the Ghostbusters reboot; and while lots of his ideas, like an all-female cast and Cecily Strong playing a government agent, make it into the film, one notable aspect did not:
Ghost aliens.
Apparently, Feig wanted the film’s antagonist (imagined as a ghostly murderer played by Peter Dinklage) to recruit an army of evil ghosts, including one from outer space.

“In what I think could be a billion dollar idea – recruits the ghosts of evil beings from other parts of the universe – yes, ghost aliens! ‘Our world isn’t the only place in the universe with bad and dangerous beings that have died, you know. There’s a lot of bored dead monsters out there who are just looking for something to do.'”
Yeah, we don’t have to tell you this is dumb and obviously didn’t make it into the film, but this gives perspective to the movie we got. Ghostbusters 2016 isn’t the worst thing ever, but it could have been.
