With Phase 3 about to begin in May with Captain America: Civil War, Phase 4 is starting to unfold in the Marvel Universe!

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he Marvel Universe expands out with so many movies. Phase 3 will begin on May 6th with Captain America: Civil War as the first of nine movies that will make up Phase 3. Phase 3 concludes with Avengers: Infinity War Part II, which is scheduled to be released on May 3, 2019.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who lead the Civil War project, will also head Infinity War Part II to conclude Phase 3. There are many questions being asked by hardcore fans, such as who will be in future Phase 3 movies and who will be in the next Spider-Man reboot movie. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios boss, producer and mastermind of the MCU, has already answered questions on release dates for movies in 2020 and other future movies.

Studios are asking for these movies to have release dates about four or five years prior to their release. Feige once joked that he had movies planned out as far as 2028 for Marvel (and this was announced two years ago.) But titles and dates change all the time.

After the Phase 3 schedule was announced in October 2014, Several updates changed how it was originally shaped. When Marvel and Sony agreed to become partners in making another Spider-Man reboot movie, which is scheduled to be released sometime in 2017. Since Ant-Man was very successful, a sequel has been planned for release in 2018. Both of these adjustments pushed The Inhumans out of Phase 3 and into Phase 4.

Outside of The Inhumans, what movies are being planned for Phase 4? Outside of another Avengers movie, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 makes the most sense. The main cast for GOTG is signed on for three more movies. Newer sequels, such as Doctor Strange, would also be considered for Phase 4, unless they do poorly in theaters (but with how recent Marvel films have faired, I don’t think that will be a problem.) Feige talked about Captain America: Civil War and what will come of the movies planned for 2020.

“We’re only working on what’s been announced through the end of 2019. And it is still a big chess board for 2020 and beyond, but certainly I would say Guardians 3 is [one film that’s] up there. I don’t know what exactly the order will be.”

As of now, Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best films made by Marvel, not only from box office numbers, but also from sold merchandise. It even set the record for best movie soundtrack ever! So all of these points help create the idea that a third GOTG will be on the way for Phase 4.

While all of the main cast will return for a second movie, one piece that could be missing is writer and director James Gunn. Gunn is already working on the sequel and has a good working relationship with Marvel. But he doesn’t know if he will be directing the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but he is very interested in directing the third movie. We have a long way to go before the third movie will be cast, but look for Gunn to head the third movie.
