Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues to maintain its number one spot earning $16m domestic for a total of $548m worldwide. The film based on a group of relatively unknown comic book characters that team up to save the world has gone on to become the highest grossing film of the year and one of the best reviewed films of the summer.
The Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot managed to follow closely behind bringing in $12m domestic for a total of $275m worldwide. Cowabunga!
If I Stay, the Warner Bros. tearjerker, made $9m domestic over the weekend putting it at a worldwide total of $34m. Critics seem to have mixed feelings about the film, however, teenage girls seem to love it and that’s all that really matters.
Coming in at number four earning $8m domestic is As Above, So Below, a thriller that follows a group of explorers as they uncover the secrets of catacombs hidden underneath the city of Paris.
Rounding out the top of the weekend is the buddy “cop” comedy Let’s Be Cops. After three weeks in theaters, the boys from New Girl are still going strong with $8m domestic added to a worldwide total of $67m. On a production budget of $17m, that’s not a bad return.
