Co-director Chris Buck talks female leads and changes to Elsa as he and Jennifer Lee prepare for Frozen 2.

[dropcap size=small]F[/dropcap]rozen 2 has pretty much been a thing since the first cover of ‘Let It Go’ was uploaded to YouTube. We won’t get the sequel until at least 2018, but co-director Chris Buck is already dropping some hints as to what we should expect. For the most part, it’s more of the same, as sisters Anna and Elsa will return to take center stage.

‘We have two very strong female leads,’ Buck told MTV news. ‘We will keep that going in the next one. We will tackle other issues that, I think, are out there today that boys and girls, men and women, are dealing with. We’re very aware of what is happening in society. I don’t think any of us take [these movies] lightly. Even though they can be very funny and entertaining, when the kids watch them, they watch them over and over, and if we don’t have a decent message in there, I think we’ve missed an opportunity.’

Buck also spoke to Fandango about Frozen 2, and while he was careful not to give anything away, he did tease how Elsa’s role will change in the follow-up.

‘In Frozen she had such a dramatic journey, and at the end she’s just starting to feel like she can open up and have some fun again. That’s what was really good about Frozen Fever (their short film released in March) – we could have fun with Elsa. And that personality you will see in the next one.’

Frozen 2 is expected to release in 2018.
