In Marvel’s current phase of the MCU, we finally have a pretty solid look at the Eternals, an “immortal alien race created by the Celestials” who have lived in secret on our planet for thousands of years. Here is your first look at the teaser trailer:
While each of the Eternals has their own special set of abilities and powers, the trailer itself doesn’t explicitly state who the antagonists of the film are going to be, though we know this to be the Deviants.
According to the description from Marvel, the Deviants are, at least in the comics, an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created sapient life on Earth instigated by the Celestials and wage war against their counterparts, the Eternals. Apparently, the Deviants were created as “a delicacy to be consumed en masse by Celestials” at periodic intervals once they multiplied sufficiently. However, there is no confirmation on whether or not this will be their precise origin in the MCU.
Also worth noting in the trailer is how heavy-handed it poses the Eternals’ mentality of not stepping in to help the earth in times of need, despite clearly influencing early primitive mankind. Not quite sure what to make of that weird aspect of the trailer with “Throughout the years we have never interfered, until now.” being front and center but whatever. That said, just what were these guys up to during all the various Thanos-related genocide attempts on earth? Though I suppose the Eternals may have simply recognized that the Avengers and other unaffiliated heroes were enough to save the planet without their help so they can have the benefits of my doubts.
The film stars an incredible cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Gil Birmingham, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.
Directed by Chloe Zhao, Marvel Studios’ Eternals will release worldwide in theaters on November 5, 2021.
The score is by Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi.
