Dragon Ball Super – New God Introduced?

The official Dragon Ball Super website shows off a new image featuring some curious and intriguing characters…

Dragon Ball Super is set to air in Japan on July 5th, and the rest of the world will get their translations soon to follow (hopefully), but there is definitely a lot time between now and then and what we know of DBS is very little at the present time.

The plot of DBS is shrouded in mystery, and all we really know at this point is that there are Gods, powerful Gods, each with their own universe/region/galaxy to oversee. We also know there are at least 12 of them based on what we are told in 2013’s Battle of Gods. The sequel, Resurrection ‘F’, features the return of the same God, Lord Beerus, the God of Destruction, and his handler/trainer, Whis, but does not expand upon the revelation of Gods other than the fact that there is a Saiyan God, a Super Saiyan God to be more precise, and that power level is just the tip of the godly iceberg.

Okay, so Gods, and that’s about it. Oh, and the fact that DBS takes place after the defeat of Majin Buu but before the final episode of Dragon Ball Z, where Uub is introduced at the 24th World Martial Arts Tournament. We know this because DBS follows Resurrection ‘F’, and Pan has just been born, and Trunks and Goten are still kids, the same age they were when the fused as Gotenks and fought Buu. Okay, so it sounds like DBS could take place immediately after Resurrection ‘F’. Either that, or the kids don’t age.

Anyway, on to the purpose of this article. With the above being all we know, and that is certainly not a lot, it seems the official Dragon Ball Super website has just tossed us a little teaser revealing two new characters, something the official Twitter page threw at us earlier today. Take a look below.

The Tweet roughly translates to the following:

“Broadcast from 7/5! Dragon Ball Super official site opened! Also the main Visual premiere! Toei-Anim.co.jp?TV/dragon_s/

Okay, so here is what we know, or more precisely what we think we know; either Beerus is from a sphinx-like race of purple beings, he has a fat evil version, there is more than one God of Destruction and the larger version is him (maybe from an alternate universe featuring different timelines?) or this is Beerus’ cousin come to visit. Additionally, if you look to fat Beerus’ right, you will see what looks to be a female Whis, or a female of Whis’ race of people. So with that in mind, this begs the question, “do all Gods in the Dragon Ball Universe have handlers/trainers?”

Female Whis, from what we can tell, looks to be just as formidable as Whis himself. You’ll recall that only Whis has the ability to go toe-to-toe with Beerus, as seen in BoG, and in one strike no less.

So who exactly are these new characters? We are not exactly sure, but one of the above assumptions seems likely, though we won’t know for sure until the official word comes out and verifies their identities.

There has been speculation that Dragon Ball XenoVerse and the characters surrounding the story such as Towa, Mira, The Supreme Kai of Time, and Time Patrol Trunks (Future Trunks, the same who came to aid the Z Fighters during the Android Saga) are all going to wrap up in the story, or at least a saga within DBS at some point somehow, but this has not been confirmed. Could there be a time travel aspect to the earlier events of DBS? It’s too soon to tell, but hopefully the official Dragon Ball Super website will shed light on that for us in the near future with updates. You’ll just have to read it in Japanese when it does.
