Let’s get weird.
Doctor Strange will be the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and perhaps its strangest.
Anyway, the film will introduce reality-bending magic, mysticism, and apparently, the possibility of introducing the Marvel Multiverse.
During Comic-Con, ComicBook.com spoke with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who revealed that his film will explore concepts like new dimensions, parallel worlds, and multiple universes.
“What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychadelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60’s things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse,” the director adds. “I think Doctor Strange is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It’s really serving the same function that the comic did. Even though it was a weird aberration as a comic book, I think it was a real linchpin in the comics. It ended up being decades of new stories and I think this movie will do the same thing.”
Just like DC, each story told by Marvel Comics exists in a universe that fits into a larger multiverse. These universes coexist together, and are designated by number. For example, the main continuity of Marvel Comics, where most stories take place, is Earth-616. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is designated Earth-199999.
(I know, this is DC, but this image illustrates the multiverse concept really well.)
It seems that Derrickson is suggesting that Doctor Strange will open the door for some cross-universe shenanigans, like maybe Iron Man meeting a female version of himself, or even the cast of the MCU meeting other incarnations of movie characters.
