From how the animated-version looked, this makes sense!
[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]ith the announcement of Mulan becoming a live-action movie comes controversy that the movie might not be an all-asian cast. But Disney came out with a statement saying that the cast will be all Asian.
“Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese.”
Disney also stated that to find a Chinese actress, they will have a global search to find the right actress for the role of Mulan. The script that was made for the movie was a spec script purchased by Disney from someone who wrote the script, featuring a white-male lead. The white male was described as “a 30-something European trader who helps defend China after falling for Mulan.”
“The spec script was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney’s 1998 animated film,”
Since then, Disney has hired writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver to work on the script and feature an “Asian-love interest.” Asian fans voiced their opinion on how the movie should be made last week on Twitter.

Honestly in the version in my head MULAN is her OWN "male lead." What's the Chinese translation for "Bechdel Test" again? https://t.co/ckDj7o9Tke

Mulan didn't need a single white character to make $300 million at the box office in 1998. The live action version doesn't need any either.
