Kevin Smith has a ton on his plate right now. He’s got Clerks 3, his hockey project Hit Somebody, another low-budget comedy horror film called Moose Jaws, and the recently announced sequel to Mallrats.
[dropcap size=small]O[/dropcap]n a recent episode of Smith’s Hollywood Babble-On podcast he went into more detail around the reasoning for the Mallrats 2 schedule bump. Check out the transcript from the podcast below.
Be aware that the following contains spoilers. It shouldn’t be anything that will ruin your movie-watching experience, but we still have to tell you anyway.
“We’ve been putting together Mallrats 2. It’s been a real, like Blues Brothers ‘We’re putting the band back together, on a mission from Smod.’ So this week, we had a lot of activity behind the scenes as well and it looks like we might — it’s Mallrats and so we require a big old empty mall, and it would be nice if we could do things to the mall. So if you had a mall and the mall was eventually going away, that would let you like blow the fucking mall up, which happens in the third act. So we found a place that we can go to and in order to get to that mall before it goes away, we were talking about initially shooting Clerks 3 this summer and then we were going to get to Mallrats in the beginning of 2016. And then it jumped into 2015, where we were going to shoot Clerks and then hopefully Mallrats before the end of the year. But now, based on a fucking mall that we all dig that will be going away, the priority has become Mallrats. So the next fucking movie I’m making is Mallrats 2. No word on Batfleck yet, but it would be fun to see if we could get him.”
So to recap just in case it wasn’t clear, Clerks 3 has now been pushed back in favor of the new top priority Mallrats 2. A huge thanks is definitely in order to the abandoned mall that is willing to get blown up for the sake of comedy.
Casting is also off to a great start. Most of the original cast including Jason Mewes, Stan Lee, Michael Rooker, Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee, Jeremy London, Renee Humphrey, Joey Lauren Adams, Sven-Ole Thorsen, Bryan Johnson, Walt Flanagan, Scott Mosier, and the recently added Brian O’Halloran are all set to return.

All of this seems to be moving at a ridiculously fast pace. Truly warranted great news for Smith who usually has to jump through hoops to get a film made. For the remaining three cast members to go, we have to imagine that one of them has to be Ben Affleck. Hopefully he can take some time out of his batschedule for a few days of shooting.
