Chris Hemsworth will cross paths with his on-screen son, Chris Pine.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]his week news surfaced during a press conference promoting Star Trek Beyond that Chris Hemsworth will make a return in the newly announced 4th Star Trek movie in the rebooted franchise.

Hemsworth will be reprising his role as George Kirk, the father of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), who Hemsworth first portrayed in the first Star Trek movie back in 2009 – a few years prior to his Thor days.

Paramount, Skydance and Bad Robot confirmed Hemsworth and Pine will cross paths in the new Trek movie, with Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz tweeting the news as confirmed by Star Trek’s producer and previous director, J.J. Abrams.

Pine and Hemsworth are sure to have an interesting on-screen relationship, since James T. Kirk is said to have always lived under the shadow of the legacy left behind by his father, whom he’d never met.

George Kirk is known for having sacrificed himself to save hundreds whilst his son was being born, so how they come to encounter each other will be interesting in and of itself.

The rest of the cast are also currently set to return, with the unfortunate exception of Anton Yelchin (Chekov) who sadly passed away last month. J.J. has since stated there are no plans to replace Yelchin in the 4th instalment.

John D. Payne and Patrick McKay will pen the screenplay, with Abrams returning to produce alongside Star Trek Beyond producer, Lindsey Weber. No director has been announced, but more is sure to be revealed at San Diego Comic Con this weekend.

Star Trek Beyond is set to hit theatres 22 July.
