Avengers 4 is now tentatively untitled.

[dropcap size=small]D[/dropcap]isney and Marvel have confirmed that the third and fourth Avengers film will no longer be titled Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Avengers: Infinity War Part II. The third film will now simply be titled Avengers: Infinity War. The fourth film is now currently untitled.

We’ve known since May that the film’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, always intended to change the names of these films, it was just at that time, they hadn’t come up with new titles.

Although the titles have changed, we don’t think this will mean the plot of both these films will be altered. With their year apart release dates intact, both films will probably be shot back to back, and ultimately feature the anticipated showdown between the Avengers and Thanos teased all the way back in 2012.

Storywise, these films will probably remain a two-parter. The title changes, if we had to guess, were probably made due to the negative stigma attached to two-part films.

Starting with Harry Potter and the Death Hollows, splitting the “final” entry of a film into two pictures has become a common, and loathed, Hollywood trend. While Harry Potter benefitted from splitting its seventh book source material, other series like Twilight and The Hunger Games used this trend as an opportunity to just make another film, and thus, more money.

Many of these sliced up movies have received notably worse critical reception and success at the box office. In fact, Divergent: Allegiant was such a bomb, the final film will be a TV movie.

Two-part movies can easily suck. Would the fourth Avengers suck if it was titled Infinity War Part II? Probably not, but a separate title will help draw in a bigger audience, and hopefully help end this obnoxious trend.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4 2018.

The fourth Avengers film comes May 3 2019.
