Matthew Lewis (of the visual effects studio, Practical Magic) says the experience is ‘not a game.’

[dropcap size=small]O[/dropcap]ne interesting announcement to come out of the AMD event at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) this month, was the unveiling of a virtual reality experience of the Assassin’s Creed variety.

As you can see from the above picture, the Assassin’s Creed virtual reality experience will be based on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film (starring Michael Fassbender), and will be developed jointly by Fox, and visual effects studio, Practical Magic.

The President of VR at Practical Magic, Matthew Lewis, explained at GDC that the project was filmed alongside the movie in several different locations. He was also keen to emphasise that it would ‘not be a game,’ but didn’t reveal much else.

The Assassin’s Creed film will follow the adventures of Callum Lynch as he explores the memories of his Spanish, 15th Century ancestor, Aguilar. Aguilar is part of a secret society of assassin’s, and Callum quickly finds himself developing the same abilities as those possessed by his relative from the past.

Fassbender will be playing both Callum and Aguilar, alongside the likes of Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons, with Justin Kurzel directing.

Everyone is on a major VR kick at the moment – with several reveals for the latest VR devices and their varying price tags emerging – so it’s not at all surprising to hear that lots of different virtual reality projects are being fired off left, right, and centre.

Hopefully more will be revealed about the VR AC project in due course.

The Assassin’s Creed movie is set for release 21 December, 2016.
