Matt Reeves, the writer and director behind 2022’s The Batman, is currently dealing with a family matter serious enough that DC Studios paused production on the sequel entirely to give him the space he needed. That kind of stoppage on a film of this scale is not a small call, and the fact that the studio made it without apparent hesitation says something about how they are handling the situation.
While production came to abrupt halt, we now know, thanks to a report coming from Deadline, Steven Soderbergh is taking over principal photography while Reeves tends to his family.
Soderbergh, an Oscar-winning director with nothing obligating him to get involved, reached out to Reeves personally because he is a fan of his work and offered to cover the remaining weeks of principal photography. The two are collaborating closely throughout, and Reeves will return to take over post-production when he is ready. Soderbergh put his own framing on the job in plain terms: generate footage that sits naturally alongside what Reeves already shot, so that when Reeves comes back to cut the film, the whole thing holds together as his.
The cast assembled for this sequel is staggering. Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell are all returning as Bruce Wayne, Alfred, and the Penguin. Joining them are Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch, which is a lineup that would make most films jealous on its own.
The Batman Part II is currently scheduled for release on February 18, 2028. Whether the production pause affects that date is still unclear. The first film grossed $772.8 million worldwide, so the pressure to deliver something worthy of that audience is very much alive, and right now two of the most respected directors working today are sharing the responsibility of making sure it gets there.
