Earlier today, Nintendo unveiled the return of beloved classic Donkey Kong Country Returns coming to the Nintendo Switch as an HD remaster.  The game is slated for release on January 16, 2025, bringing enhanced visuals and beloved gameplay to a new generation of players. Take a look at the trailer below:

The reveal trailer, showcased during today’s Nintendo Direct, features iconic characters Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong traversing lush jungle environments, collecting bananas, smashing barrels, and riding their trusty rhino companion, Rambi. The vibrant graphics and smooth animations highlight the care taken in this remaster to honor the original game’s charm while updating it for modern hardware.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will include all 80 levels from the original Wii version and the extra content introduced in the 2013 Nintendo 3DS port. This comprehensive package ensures that players can enjoy the full breadth of the game’s challenges and adventures. Additionally, the remaster will support two-player local cooperative play, allowing friends and family to join the fun together.

Originally released in 2010 for the Nintendo Wii, “Donkey Kong Country Returns” was developed by Retro Studios. It was celebrated for revitalizing the classic Donkey Kong franchise with new mechanics and a fresh take on the side-scrolling platformer genre. The game was later ported to the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, adding new levels and features that expanded the original experience.

This HD remaster aims to capture the essence of what made Donkey Kong Country Returns a hit while enhancing it with updated graphics and improved gameplay mechanics. Fans of the original game and newcomers alike will find much to enjoy in this polished version.
