Scream VI Final Trailer Hints at Legacy Character’s Possible Return as Ghostface

“This is why you go to the movies.”

Scream VI just got its final trailer and up until this point, we have never been more excited for an entry in the series. Why? Because this movie aims to take things in a different direction, unlike anything we have ever seen before. And if the Final Trailer is any indication, it is going to succeed with flying colors. Take a look:

Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter. In Scream VI, Melissa Barrera (“Sam Carpenter”), Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Mindy Meeks-Martin”), Mason Gooding (“Chad Meeks-Martin”), Jenna Ortega (“Tara Carpenter”), Hayden Panettiere (“Kirby Reed”) and Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) return to their roles in the franchise alongside Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving.

UPDATE | 03/09/23 – 09:58a PST: you can ignore all this, lol.

We have some theories on who or what this killer is. And even though we flagged this section of the article as a spoiler, we don’t know for sure so it isn’t exactly a spoiler but we feel it was still necessary in case you aren’t caught up with the Scream franchise at present. That said, allow us to share some thoughts with you…

This trailer, the final one just a couple paragraphs above, teases the idea that the person (or persons) under the Ghostface mask could in fact be a legacy character. The verbiage used by Ghostface to Gail, “strange that you and I have never spoken on the phone… this is long overdue”, suggests that the killer is someone who has been around for some time. So who could it be? Stu Macher.

In this trailer, we see Ghostface in the presence of pretty much everyone in the core cast, so it isn’t likely to be any one of them. Sure, we have seen Ghostface circumvent suspicion in the past by having two killers in order to fool the audience but there is certainly something else going on here. And the dialog exchange between he and Gail is the biggest indicator that it is someone who has become an expert in killing. Someone who has been training for years, patiently waiting in the shadows for their time to strike. And we think that person could be Stu.

The plot and other trailers also align with this as a possibility due to the fact that this killer is not like any we have ever seen. The trailers lay that on very thick, not only with Ghostface pointing out that he himself is “something different” but that he is also not afraid to kill out in the open, as shown in the convenience store with the sawed-off shotgun. Only someone confident with nothing to lose would try something so bold and Stu would be that person.

We would assume that after the events of the original Scream, Stu somehow survived being stabbed and electrocuted and needed years in hiding to recover. And considering this is a horror movie, we would not be surprised if Stu managed to kill someone else and replace his body in the morgue. Or, maybe he had help. His sister Leslie is still alive after all these years and her son, Vince was killed in Scream 5, giving her motive for revenge against the other survivors, possibly blaming them for getting her son involved. Leslie could have aided Stu in his escape and recovery, both of them watching from a safe distance waiting until the opportune time to get revenge. Of course, Stu’s motive would be more simple- to kill Sam Carpenter, daughter of Billy Loomis, his partner who betrayed him in the first film by fatally stabbing him and hiding his true motives from Stu.

This would also explain why the killer we see in the trailers for Scream VI is more athletic, agile, and not afraid to take things further than everyone else. This killer has been around training for this moment and has learned from past mistakes. If it is Stu, and we think it very well could be, this would also explain the shrine of Ghostface killer memorabilia as Stu would be obsessed with getting his hands on it after so many copycats attempted to follow in his footsteps. In essence, Stu has been immortalized as an icon of sorts, and he revels in this.

To recap- we think Stu survived, has been in recovery and training all these years, and is exacting revenge on Billy’s daughters after Billy betrayed him in the first movie. We think it would be hard for Stu to do this alone so he has to have gotten help, possibly from his sister Leslie who is still alive (maybe as a mortician or member of law enforcement?). Leslie’s motives would be to get revenge on the survivors after her son, Vince was killed in Scream 5. It all kind of just fits, doesn’t it? Guess we will find out this week.

Scream VI releases in theaters this Friday, March 10th.
