Henry Cavill’s future in the DCEU as its Man of Steel has been shrouded in the unknown for quite some time. We had heard neither he was staying nor going since his last appearance in the Snyder Cut and that silence has left many assuming he was done with the role. However, it turns out that Cavill is allegedly coming back for The Flash and is shooting some scenes for the end of the film as we speak. And the craziest part? It is all thanks to Black Adam star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
According to Giant Freakin Robot, a trusted source of theirs is reporting that Johnson has spoken to Warner Bros. Discovery about bringing Cavill back to the role in next year’s The Flash, starring the controversial Ezra Miller, for the film’s ending. What that means exactly is uncertain as it has not been reported on as to what those scenes are about nor do we know if this is a one-and-done for Cavill or if he will be returning to other future DCEU projects.
We are not sure what the talks pertain to and just how Johnson convinced either party to continue with Cavill as Superman but if this is true, we could not be happier about it.
Cavill’s last appearance as Superman was in the 2021 cut of the Justice League that underwent significant reshoots and editing to match more of director Zack Snyder’s vision. Snyder had left the film during production due to a family tragedy and the film was passed over to director Joss Whedon.
Cavill hasn’t touched on the subject of playing the role of Superman much as of late but back in 2018, before the Snyder Cut was greenlit, Cavill posted a video to his Instagram while wearing a Krypton t-shirt and brandishing a Superman action figure of his likeness. This was during a time when rumors flooded the internet that Cavill was done with the role, leading many to believe that this short Instagram video was in response to that, suggesting he was still all in.
While the DC Extended Universe, which includes Zack Snyder’s Justice League, has been met with major criticism, Henry Cavill’s Superman was one of its highlights. Fans had been hoping to see him return but the most we got was an appearance in Shazam! that used Cavill’s likeness as Superman from the neck down, which only confused fans even more. Regardless of all that, we are excited to hear that he may return after all and we are especially grateful that Black Adam actor Dwayne Johnson fought for it.
Black Adam is scheduled to release on October 21st, 2022 while The Flash is set to release on June 23rd, 2023.
