Update 05/31/19
It’s official, Variety confirms that Robert Pattinson is our new Batman.
Look, we get it. This is… scary. But who knows? Maybe Pattinson will surprise us all like Ledger did with the Joker? It isn’t like DC/WB have made mistakes with their DC Cinematic Universe over recent years, or anything, right?
Original story follows:
Out of the way Batfleck, there’s a new Caped Crusader hitting the big screen. Variety reports that Robert Pattinson is currently in negotiations to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DC and Warner Bros. upcoming film The Batman.
Sources close to Variety say that this isn’t a done deal yet, but Pattinson is the studio’s top choice, and an official announcement is expected soon.
The Batman has been in development for years as the film, to be directed by Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes), was initially conceptualized for Ben Affleck before he stepped away from the role. Variety reports that pre-production for the film should begin this summer, for an anticipated summer 2021 release date.
Pattinson is of course best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise (remember that?), but has since had a successful career starring in independent dramas such as Cosmopolis, Good Time, and High Life.
Again, this isn’t 100% confirmed yet, but we’re super interested to see Pattinson’s take as the sixth theatrical Dark Knight.
The Batman comes to theaters on June 21, 2021.
