James Gunn hasn’t even seen how successful Guardians of the Galaxy has been at the box office yet and he knows his next gig. He’ll be directing the recently announced sequel to said film, the surprisingly named Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
What remains to be seen is whether or not the co-writer of the first film, Nicole Perlman, will return herself. TheWrap met with her during Comic-Con and got to talk to her about what she knew about the film, even though she didn’t say she would be involved. Quoting Perlman, “Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it, they’ll wanna do a sequel. So, it’s going to happen.”
Marvel announced the expected release date for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” as July 28, 2017 during a panel at Comic-Con. It was considered a big surprise to many of the attendees, which is notable in a panel that included teasers of Age of Ultron and more information on the Ant-Man film.
It seems that Marvel has a lot of interesting things planned for Phase 3 of the Cinematic Universe films. IGN detailed some of these plans in an interview with Kevin Feige, with 6 release dates announced for films after Age of Ultron that are currently untitled (along with those, the yet-to-be-named Captain America 3 has a 2016 release date and Ant-Man has a 2015 release date). Whether or not these films will be new franchises or continuations of the current ones remain to be seen, and since the dates reach into 2019 we surely will not hear about some of these for a significant amount of time. We expect to hear more about the nearer-future films in the coming months.
