Times are changing.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]n unnamed source at DC Films recently said that they were open to having a R-Rated superhero film. They answered a question from The Wrap about having a R-Rated superhero film by saying “100% yes. With the right character.”
With the recent success of Logan and Deadpool, two R-Rated superhero films, the executives at DC/Warner Bros are starting to rethink their strategy. There are currently no films in the DC Extended Universe that are R-Rated or are planning to be R-Rated. Warner Bros did release an extended R-Rated version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on home video and they have released other R-Rated superhero films that were not in the DCEU, Watchmen (2009) and Constantine (2005).
Disney chairman Bob Iger has already gone on the record saying that he did not want to have any R-Rated film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So it will be interesting to see what DC/Warner Bros will do. Will they follow the Marvel approach and release films that are not in the DCEU as R-Rated or will they break from the script and release a R-Rated DCEU film? We will just have to wait and see.
