Road to Rehab?
The teaser trailer for Cars 3, the latest animated film from Pixar, has dropped.
Check it out below.
If you were expecting a few goofy car puns or at least one uttering of “Get-R-Done,” you’re unfortunately out of luck. This teaser trailer was strangely gritty, dark, and disturbing, as we see protagonist Lighting McQueen get into a horrible accident, followed by the tagline “From this moment, everything will change.”
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
Let’s back up a bit. The Cars movies are easily the weakest in Pixar’s filmography. While gigantic merchandise machines, these films noticeably lack the story and characters the esteemed animated studio is known for creating. Cars isn’t terrible, it still has a lot of Pixar charm, but Cars 2 is horrifically generic and dull, with a misplaced emphasis on Larry the Cable Guy’s Mater and a straight-to-DVD plot.
We literally haven’t seen much of Cars 3, but this teaser shows that the series seems to be taking a more serious direction, perhaps matching the dark realties explored in another Pixar sequel, Toy Story 3.
So will Cars 3 be a painful redemption tale of Lightening Queen’s rehabilitation and return to glory? Will we finally learn how the cars reproduce? Will this movie actually be good?
We’ll just have to wait and see.
Cars 3 hits theaters on June 16, 2017.
