Depp is said to be playing the powerful dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald.

[dropcap size=small]J[/dropcap]ohnny Depp has been cast in the sequel to this November’s release of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Depp’s role has not yet been confirmed, but Hypable reports he will be filling the shoes of Gellert Grindelwald, who is the most powerful dark wizard prior to Voldermort’s days. A glimpse of the back of Depp’s head can apparently be seen for a brief moment in a short preview of the first film, which also suggests we’ll be seeing Johnny make an appearance before the sequel.

One of the most exciting aspects of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is that it will be taking place in New York City, which means we’ll be getting a better look at another magical community in a different setting to that of the Harry Potter films.

With this mind, the sequel looks set to be exiciting in much the same way, as it has been revealed – thanks to a cover story by Empire (via Digital Spy) – that the second movie will shift away from the US to the new setting of Paris, France.

Director David Yates revealed the next film will be departing from New York to “another big city” during a Global Fan Event:

“We next see Newt in another big capital city. It’s not going to be New York. It’s somewhere else entirely. [JK Rowling] has actually written the script and it’s just as magical and just as marvelous as the first one – but very different.”

It’s rather exciting to know we’ll be getting a better look at other wizarding communities in differnet countries in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movies, and with four more to follow the first, we’re sure to learn a whole lot more about Rowling’s magical wizarding world in the years to come.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set to hit the big screens 18 November, 2016.
