Gotham’s caped crusader is the one responsible for the Joker’s tattoos.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he attire and tattoos on Jared Leto’s Joker has been the center of scrutiny and controversy ever since the trailer/set photos for Suicide Squad were released. Many fans weren’t happy with Jared Leto’s look considering it was very un-Joker like and he looked more like a pimp and less like a supervillain mastermind. Thankfully, director David Ayer has shared some insight on the meaning behind the Joker’s tattoos and his fake teeth.

“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

While David Ayer’s explanation for the Joker’s grill and his “damaged” tattoo now make sense we still don’t know anything about his “HA HA HA’ tattoos that are spread all over his chest and left arm. On the other hand, we now have a connection between the Joker’s tattoos and the spray painted words on Robin’s suit that we saw in Bruce Wayne’s bat cave in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
