Two of Marvel’s most popular mutants will have their own sequel released in 2017.
[dropcap size=small]N[/dropcap]ew details have surfaced regarding 20th Century Fox’s plan for their upcoming X-Men based Marvel movies and it looks like 2017 could be the best year thus far regarding movies of mutant origins. With Deadpool becoming a smashing success that blew everyone’s expectations out of the water and fans clamoring for another Wolverine movie to make up for the terrible and grotesque film that was The Wolverine, 20th Century Fox plans on releasing films for both mutants in 2017 (as long as things go according to plan that is).
As of right now, 20th Century Fox has four X-Men films being developed with Wolverine 3 currently shooting, New Mutants’ to begin production in the spring of 2017, the script for Gambit finally coming together, and Deadpool 2 to begin shooting in early 2017. According to producer Simon Kinberg, the original Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are finishing the script for the film and it is expected that Deadpool 2 will be released in theaters in October of 2017. Are you excited yet?
With all clues pointing towards Wolverine 3 following the Old Man Logan storyline and Hugh Jackman hanging up his claws at the end of the film (whether or not he will pass on the role of Wolverine to another actor/actress remains to be confirmed) there is more mystery surrounding Deadpool 2 than any other planned 20th Century Fox film. We are very confident that Cable will be in Deadpool 2 but as for the storyline, what other X-Men are involved and where it fits into the X-Men cinematic universe, everything is essentially up in the air.
20th Century Fox has already announced that they want Deadpool 2 to be a moderately budgeted film just like Deadpool was and while this sounds confusing considering Deadpool made a grand total of $760.3 million at the box office, it seems the writers and director are happy with this monetary decision. Of course, there are also other X-Men films that 20th Century Fox has planned that will either include older or younger versions of other characters (like Professor X, for example) so figuring out which mutant can or can’t appear in Deadpool 2 is tricky business.
In order for Deadpool to become not just a side film in itself, but join the main storyline of the X-Men movies as well, the X-Force will have to eventually be a centerpiece in a Deadpool film. Or X-Force could be a film in its own right and explain in better detail its origins. Regardless of what 20th Century Fox plans on doing one thing is certain, 2017 will be a great year with Deadpool 2 and Wolverine 3 being released and the studio has many more exciting films on the way.
Wolverine 3 will be released in theaters on March 3rd, 2017 and Deadpool 2 will be released sometime in the fall of 2017.
