Maverick cautiously optimistic about the rumored sequel.
There have been rumors swirling around for years that a sequel to the 1986 hit Top Gun is in the works. In fact, just recently it appeared that Top Gun 2 was taking off (pun intended); when last month, Skydance CEO David Ellison acknowledged that a screenplay is being worked on.
However, it now appears that the sequel is a long ways off, as Maverick himself, Tom Cruise, talked on whether we’ll actually see the flick while at the premiere of his latest film, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
In an interview at the premiere with Extra, Cruise revealed that Top Gun 2 hasn’t really crossed his mind.
“I have not thought about it, we have not turned our eye to it. I don’t know,” Cruise admitted. “If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do.”
Also in the interview with Extra, which can be viewed below, Cruise commented on what approach should be taken for the special effects of the hypothetical sequel. He says, “I’d like to fly those jets again, but we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets… I’m saying right now no CGI on the jets.”
While it is possible that Cruise is just being coy, the footage of the interview shows that he appears to be pretty out of the loop for Top Gun 2, but also very excited and optimistic.
His practical effects ambitions for the film are also noteworthy, as they no doubt would make the movie feel and appear more authentic, but the risks and costs involved with those effects alone might keep delaying the sequel.
Regardless, a Top Gun sequel is still far into the horizon, so till then, make due by rewatching the original and listening to “Danger Zone” on repeat.
