Satoru Itawa has passed away according to a statement released by Nintendo.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he president of Nintendo, Satoru Itawa, has regrettably passed away due to a bile duct growth. Satoru Itawa had been battling the bile duct growth for several years now and the bile duct growth was the reason why he was forced to miss last year’s E3.
Nintendo released a statement saying:
“Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.”
Satoru Iwata first joined Nintendo as a programmer back in the 1980s and worked in Nintendo’s HAL laboratory. He worked on popular games like Balloon Fight, Earthbound and Kirby. He was responsible for the creation of Dream Land in Kirby‘s debut on the famous Game Boy back in 1992. In 2000 Satoru Iwata became the director of Nintendo and two years later he was appointed the president of Nintendo in 2002.
While Satoru Iwata was president of Nintendo he oversaw some of the most popular consoles produced by the company, the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS. As well as some of the least popular consoles, like the GameCube and the Wii U. He was greatly admired for making sure that Nintendo’s fans had a close relationship with the company and was the host of the popular “Iwata Asks”, which was a series of game developer interviews.
